VentingNot all heating appliance are created equal. Oil heat, natural gas and wood all have different requirements because of the difference in the chemical makeup of their respective fuels but also of the temperatures the chimney faces. That's easy enough to understand but the chimney and connector come in different sizes which is determined by the input rate of the fuel. The manufacturers' engineering departments have determined what size the breech needs to be to safely and efficiently exhaust the flue gases. They are also the ones to test the equipment to various standards and determine what material available will safely and economically usher the flue gas up and out of the building. Keep in mind this is all done to maintain a temperature where there is not condensation and also to keep the chimney warm enough to develop adequate draft.
Several years ago customers of Thompson Sales found some installations needed a reduction to clearances to combustibles. Other times it was prudent to keep enough temperature in an unheated space (under the house) to eliminate condensation and improve the draft. The venting material was not being sold locally so we jumped in and began to stock Type L-Vent. Our original supplier, Energy vent was purchased by Selkirk several years ago so some of this product is still made in Canada and some in the USA. Consolidation running rampant. |
Type L-Vent |
L-vent may be used for oil or gas heat where the flue gas temperature will not exceed 575 degrees F. It is a double wall pipe with a stainless steel inner pipe, an inner space of just air and an outer pipe of galvanized steel. Modern oil heat appliances are typically approved to use this as a chimney. It is also OK to vent natural gas or propane although maybe a bit of overkill. Cannot use it for wood, pellet, due to the chance of exceeding the temperature maximum. Thompson Sales has stock in this vent pip in 4", 5" and 6" inner diameters. It may be used indoors or outside but the drawback to outside is the galvanized outer pipe will show rust over time.

Type A-Vent (All Fuel) |
A-vent is built with a stainless steel inner pipe and a stainless steel outer pipe. Sandwiched in between is an insulating material that serves two functions: 1. It will keep lower termperature exhaust gases warmer in severely frigid conditions. 2. Also, it protects and reduces clearances to combustibles while still being able to accommodate temperatures of 1,000 degrees F. Its called All Fuel because it is approved for fuel oil, gas (natural and propane) wood and wood by-products. This is typically used on the exterior of a building from the point the chimney system exits the building. Thompson Sales, Inc. stocks only the 4" inside diameter size of this product category to support oil stove sales when needed and a special kind of wood stove made by Navigator Stove. The stainless outer pipe will survive the elements better than the L-vent.
